This Privacy Policy explains how the Responsible Cooking Alliance browser extension, developed by ICCS as part of the DietWise project, handles user data.
Who We Are
The extension is operated by the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), https://www.iccs.gr/.
What The Extension Does
The extension helps assess online recipe and food-related content against nutrition and sustainability criteria. When you choose to assess a page, the extension may read the content of the browser tab you are viewing, convert that content to Markdown, and send it to our servers for processing.
Data We Process
The extension may process:
- The visible content of the web page you choose to assess.
- The URL of recipes or food-related pages assessed through the extension.
- Your accept or reject decisions when the extension suggests changes to recipe ingredients.
- Basic technical request data needed to operate and secure the service, such as timestamps, server logs, browser/extension version, and error information.
We do not intentionally collect your name, email address, account details, payment information, passwords, authentication cookies, or personal communications.
How We Use Data
We use submitted page content only to provide the assessment requested by the user. Our servers do not store the content of the page after processing.
We store assessed recipe URLs and ingredient suggestion decisions for statistical, research, evaluation, and reporting purposes related to the DietWise project. These statistics may be used to understand recipe trends, assess alignment with nutrition guidelines and sustainability practices, improve the Responsible Cooking Alliance tools, evaluate project impact, and support the scientific and reporting activities described in the DietWise Grant Agreement.
What We Store
We store:
- URLs of assessed recipes or food-related pages.
- Accept/reject decisions about suggested ingredient changes.
- Aggregated statistical outputs derived from extension use.
We do not store the full page content submitted for assessment.
Sharing Of Data
We do not sell, rent, or share user data with third parties for advertising, profiling, or unrelated commercial purposes.
We do not share eponymous, named, or directly identifiable personal data with third parties. Any reporting, publication, or project communication uses aggregated or de-identified statistics.
Where service providers are necessary to host, secure, or operate our servers, they may process data only on our behalf, under our instructions, and not for their own purposes.
Retention
Page content submitted for assessment is processed transiently and is not retained after processing.
Recipe URLs, ingredient decision statistics, and related technical records are retained only for as long as needed for DietWise statistical, research, reporting, security, and legal obligations, after which they are deleted or anonymized.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect transmitted and stored data, including encrypted transmission over HTTPS, access controls, and server-side safeguards. No internet-based service can guarantee absolute security.
User Choices
You control when to use the extension’s assessment features. If you do not want page content or recipe URLs to be transmitted, do not run an assessment on that page; the extension will not read the content of the page unless you click the “Assess” button. You may also disable or uninstall the extension at any time.
Children
The extension is not intended to knowingly collect personal data from children without appropriate authorization.
Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy when the extension, our processing practices, or legal requirements change. The updated version will be published in the extension store listing or linked from it.
