Our mission
The DietWise project aims to create innovative solutions to promote healthy and sustainable food practices
The main missions include understanding food environments and citizen needs, boosting motivation to use nutrition guidelines, developing digital social innovations, empowering vulnerable people, engaging through co-creation and citizen science, pilot testing the effectiveness of interventions, building capabilities to follow nutrition guidelines, and developing a sample plan to enhance the uptake of beneficial tools and applications. These missions collectively strive to foster healthier and more sustainable food environments, empower citizens, and provide valuable insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders.
Understanding Food Environments and Citizen Needs
Conduct surveys, interviews, and qualitative research to understand food environments, citizen needs, and the motivation of influencers.
Boosting Motivation to Use Nutrition Guidelines
Develop and test innovative behavioral interventions based on motivational matching to encourage citizens to follow nutrition guidelines.
Digital Social Innovations and AI-Based Apps
Create the Responsible Cooking Alliance (RCA) add-on tool and the RecipeWatch app to guide and improve food environments and consumer decision-making.
Our objectives
Understanding food environments and citizen needs
71% of people now get their cooking inspiration from social media, yet little research has explored how this impacts nutrition. DietWise will investigate how food environments shape citizens’ needs, what drives influencers to align with nutrition guidelines, and how to support vulnerable groups. Through large-scale surveys and in-depth research, we’ll assess engagement with nutrition tools and explore ways to boost influencers’ role in promoting healthier choices. Our findings will provide institutional insights and strategies to enhance the adoption of beneficial dietary tools across diverse communities.
Boosting motivation to use nutrition guidelines for cooking with novel behavioral interventions
Traditional approaches to nutrition fail to drive real behavior change as they overlook individual needs. To address this, DietWise will develop motivationally matched interventions, tailoring messages to align with people’s values and goals. We will test two key strategies—norms and social influence—while considering factors like culture, religion, finances, and food waste. This approach will enhance the adoption of nutrition guidelines, making healthy eating more accessible and relevant to diverse communities.
Digital social innovations and AI-based apps to empower citizens
To tackle unhealthy and unsustainable food environments, DietWise will develop two innovative digital solutions. The Responsible Cooking Alliance (RCA) will help influencers align their content with national dietary guidelines, promoting healthier, more sustainable choices. Meanwhile, RecipeWatch, an AI-powered app, will analyze recipes and suggest personalized adjustments to improve nutrition. By integrating familiar food platforms, these tools will empower citizens to make informed, healthier choices effortlessly.
Empowering vulnerable people
Unhealthy food environments disproportionately impact vulnerable groups, including low-income families, the elderly, and youth. DietWise will prioritize their needs by identifying the most vulnerable citizens in pilot countries and assessing their engagement with nutrition tools. Through large-scale surveys and targeted research, we will gain insights into their food literacy, preferences, and behaviors. Using an inclusive approach, we will evaluate and improve the accessibility of digital tools and interventions to ensure they effectively support those who need them most.
Engagement through co-creation and citizen science to boost innovations
DietWise will use co-creation to engage citizens and stakeholders in developing and validating innovative nutrition tools and interventions. Through co-creation spaces, we will bring together vulnerable groups, influencers, retailers, nutritionists, and policymakers to shape and refine solutions. Stakeholders will be involved at every stage, from idea generation to prototyping and testing. By integrating citizen science and real behavior data, we will ensure our innovations are practical, inclusive, and impactful.
Pilot testing the effectiveness of apps and behavioral interventions
DietWise will co-select and test tailored interventions in pilot countries using the Intervention Mapping protocol to ensure effectiveness. We will evaluate their cost-efficiency, scalability, and integration with existing apps and tools. To maximize impact, selected interventions will be embedded into influencers’ and retailers’ platforms, reaching more citizens and promoting healthier, more sustainable food choices.
Building capabilities to follow nutrition guidelines
DietWise will address the ethical responsibility of influencers and the food industry in shaping food choices. We will define clear boundaries for promoting responsible cooking advice and ensure influencers and companies align their activities with nutrition guidelines. A dedicated training program on integrity and voluntary reporting (RCA initiative) will be developed. Additionally, we will empower citizens with knowledge through consumer empowerment guidelines in collaboration with SAFE, helping them make informed, healthy, and sustainable food choices.
Developing a sample plan on how to enhance the uptake of beneficial tools and applications
DietWise will develop practical decision-making guidelines for policymakers to help meet the European Green Deal and other EU climate and food strategies. Our project’s innovative approach, combining voluntary self-regulation and new ICT solutions, will support the uptake of healthy, sustainable food practices across Europe. We will share our findings at EU events, scientific gatherings, and with the public, ensuring the knowledge benefits all citizens. With key partners in nutrition guideline development, we are well-positioned to offer impactful guidelines tailored to different socio-economic contexts and national laws.
In conclusion, the DietWise project is dedicated to fostering healthier and more sustainable food environments. By understanding food environments and citizen needs, boosting motivation to use nutrition guidelines, developing innovative digital tools, and empowering vulnerable groups, DietWise aims to create lasting positive impacts on food provision and cooking at home.
Through collaboration, co-creation, and continuous evaluation, the project will contribute to healthier diets and a more sustainable future for all.
